There are Some Natural Alternatives to Botox.
I want to bring awareness regarding the safety of Botox and let you be the judge whether or not it is right for you!
As we all know Botox has become a very popular, quick and easy chemical procedure to treat lines and wrinkles.
Let's Do Some Botox Q&A!
I think this will be the best way to get a good overview of the pro's and con's of Botox.
Is Botox a Good Idea?
I wish I had a quarter for every time I was asked this. First and foremost my disclaimer will always be, "You Do You!" If you love Botox wonderful! If you are on the fence, then here are some Q&A's and just a little more "food for thought" before you take that next step.
Just remember, there are sooo many different kinds of modalities, injectables, and topicals on the market today that can give you the results you are looking for, Botox is just one of them. The question is, are all these "scientific options" really good for you and your skin? So hang on, here we go!
Did You Know Botox is Actually a Trade Name for Botulism?
In a nutshell, Botulism (Botulinum toxins) blocks the signals to the nerves that instruct your muscles to contract.
What Does that Mean to You and Your Health?
Botulism can cause many symptoms, the best being relaxed lines and wrinkles, the worse being paralysis, which can sometimes be fatal.
Ok, Then Why Would Anyone Inject this Toxin Into Their Body Knowing the Dangers?
Simple answer: To paralyze a muscle so that it can not move, if it can not move, it can not wrinkle. It basically "freezes" a muscle, relaxing it so that it stops wrinkling.
Is Botox a Permanent Procedure?
It is a temporary procedure for as long as the toxin is active which is right around 3-4 months (timeline can vary per person).
Why Do My Wrinkles Look Worse After the Botox has Worn Off?!
"After receiving Botox, a patient may unconsciously attempt to re-create the facial expressions in the area where treatment has paralyzed their facial muscles. What can happen is that other, nearby muscles compensate--this can have the effect of actually creating new wrinkles." -said Dr. David S. Becker, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Physician of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Is Botox Really Safe as a Wrinkle Treatment?
Several clinical studies have assessed the safety of Botox when used cosmetically. Here are some of the side effects after receiving Botox injections from Medline Plus.
Droopy eyelids (in up to 3% of people).
Muscle weakness (in up to 2% of people).
Heartburn or indigestion (in up to 1% of people).
Facial pain (in up to 2% of people).
Tooth problems (in up to 1% of people).
Nausea (in up to 3% of people).
Other side effects of Botox may include:
Flu/respiratory symptoms
Headache
Redness/pain/swelling at the injection site.
Bleeding
Numbness
Paralysis
A Canadian study Showed Botox May Affect Muscles Not Treated by Botox.
Researchers from the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta injected Botox for approximately 6 months into the limbs of rabbits (I know, rabbits) and found they lost 1/2 of their muscle mass!
What was more concerning during this study is, they found the rabbits lost muscle mass in muscles far away from the injection site!
Cosmetic Alternatives to Botox?
Just to name a few...
Microcurrent is a positive wave that the body recognizes as beneficial to the body - this wave lifts, balances and evens out the facial muscles, bring them back into symmetry. It also tightens, firms, tones, smooths muscles and connective tissues. Plus, increases cellular activity, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, boost collagen and elastane.
Acupuncture - Greater elasticity, brightens, improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, glowing skin.
LED - Non-invasive light therapy that interacts with the skin's cells to stimulate and increase collage. Also aids in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, fades scares, diminishes age spots and overall giving a more even skin tone.
Rose Hip Seed Oil or Liquid Gold as We Like to Call it is
better than Botox! (in our opinion)...
With skin rejuvenating properties like vitamin C and lycopene, rosehip seed oil is a safer solution to repair the skin’s surface, restore elasticity and protects against sun and pollution stressors that can lead to wrinkles.
Rose Hip Seed Oil gets it revitalizing properties from the Vitamin A, C, lycopene, tocopherols and carotenoids.
“Antioxidants help prevent and undo damage to collagen in the skin. Lycopene specifically helps prevent skin discoloration, texture changes, and fine lines and wrinkles,” says dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse of Stay Skin Safe. May 15, 2019
More Benefits of Rose Hip Seed Oil!
Reduces wrinkles and firms the skin!
Rosehip oil is rich in vitamin A (street name: retinol), which can help reduce signs of skin aging, including smoothing fine lines and thickening the dermis (deeper skin layers), making the skin feel firmer and tighter, says board-certified plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, anti-aging expert and author of The Age Fix.
But That's Not All!
Rose Hip Seed Oil Protects the Skin from Free Radical Damage...
The antioxidants that rosehip oil contains, such as tocopherols and carotenoids, help to protect the skin from oxidative stress, according to a 2018 review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. They ban together to neutralize free radicals (a type of molecule that damages your cells) by donating an electron to each of them, says Dr. Youn, ultimately canceling out their skin-damaging agenda.
Rose Hip Seed Oil and Sun Damaged Skin...
One reason why skin wrinkles and marks appear is because of over-exposure to the sun – it is one of the top 10 causes of premature aging of your face. The sun’s UV rays may also cause spots on the face that result in wrinkles or discoloration. The antioxidants in Rosehip Seed Oil seem to repair these damages while the essential fatty acid content improves skin tone, pigmentation and texture.
Plus, rosehip oil is particularly high in beta-carotene—an antioxidant from the carotenoid family that promotes normal growth and renewal of skin cells, says Debra Jaliman, MD, New York-based board-certified dermatologist and author of Skin Rules.
